Our Story
CMRU began with a question that had no single answer. CMRU began when four letters and a blank domain registration turned into a useful problem: not knowing what they stood for was the entire point.
The Beginning
An independent organization, built in Cleveland.
CMRU was founded in Cleveland, Ohio as an independent organization working at the intersection of research, technology, policy, and community. It is not a spinoff, a subsidiary, or an extension of any existing institution. It was built from scratch because the problems we care about do not fit neatly inside any single department or discipline.
The idea started simply: what if an organization could operate across traditional boundaries, combining the rigor of academic research with the speed of a startup and the accountability of a civic institution? What if it could do all of that from the Midwest?
That question became CMRU.
What We Believe
Innovation happens at boundaries. Advocacy must be grounded in evidence.
Innovation
We prototype, test, iterate, and ship. We work on problems in health technology, AI, advanced manufacturing, and civic infrastructure because those are the problems that matter most right now.
Advocacy
Good ideas need good policy to scale. We publish evidence-based analysis, build coalitions, and push for regulations that allow innovation to reach the people who need it most.
Thought Leadership
We publish what we learn so others can build on it. Every project, every insight, every failure. Openness is not a marketing strategy. It is how knowledge compounds.
Why Cleveland
The Midwest has been underestimated for too long.
Cleveland is home to dense research and healthcare institutions, advanced manufacturing facilities, maker communities, and civic organizations that know how to build through complexity. The infrastructure for serious innovation was already here. What was missing was an independent organization designed to make full use of it.
The Midwest carries a manufacturing heritage that never really disappeared. It evolved. The same precision, discipline, and systems thinking that built this region's industrial base is exactly what modern research and technology work demands. CMRU is built on that foundation.

The Living Acronym
The Name
CMRU does not stand for one thing. It stands for whatever the moment requires.
We call it the Living Acronym. Every context gets its own meaning. A grant application might use "Center for Midwest Research and Urbanization." A hackathon banner might read "Creative Makers, Relentless and Unstoppable." The letters stay the same. The meaning adapts.
Where We're Going
We are in the early stages, and that is the point.
CMRU is building its first programs, publishing its first research, and assembling its first teams. We are not trying to look finished. We are trying to be honest about the work of building something real.
Our roadmap includes original research publications, open-source civic technology tools, community programs, policy analysis, and public events. Every piece of it will be documented, shared, and built in the open.
